JOHN BURR ESTABLISHES YOUNG TALENT PROGRAM
Interpretive reading and presentation skills are not taught effectively in public and private schools. Listen to the average adult in a public speaking environment. Most people drone on through material they are reading aloud with no thought of its meaning or purpose.
Many aspiring young people who possess these promising gifts are often not able to develop them until much later in life, and have often lost the strong desire they once had to learn these skills. Common sense tells us that when the desire and motivation to learn is strongest, intense individualized instruction will be most effective at this nascent stage of life.
John Burr had been teaching media voice training and speech presentation arts for over fifteen years, working primarily with adults and people in transition. Early in 2007, on the recommendation of former students, he was called by parents whose children had expressed a strong interest in learning voiceovers, and later, one who was more interested in speech arts and stage acting. He was most impressed by the abilities of these young people to learn and absorb the concepts he teaches. In many instances, they surpassed several of his adult students. Then, he had a brainstorm. Why not establish a program for young people to learn these important skills, since they are not taught comprehensively in the schools?
So, at the beginning of 2008, he established the Young Talent Program, to teach young people (who would otherwise have to put their passion for voice art on the back burner) to build spoken language and interpretive reading skills early on, so that they will have a strong foundation that will continue to develop for a lifetime.
